TED Talks - make your own TV Channel/DVD for you and your family
« on: 15 January 2009 »

I havent checked out Dedriods huge list for some time of consciousness vids etc but recently have been busy downloading all sorts of cool things to DVDs to watch instead of the rubbish on the tv (well apart from Top gear smiley which I am a new fan of lol).

I came across TED due to the Zimbardo video ... its the most brilliant resource of FREE worldclass video talks by some real stars as well as best of the not-knowns http://www.ted.com/

Quote
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free. More than 200 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.

One of my themes of late has been the cr*p we are fed my media [incidentally one TED talk about the media says that 83% of the world lives where there is no free press (not sure how that is calculated)].  Anyway free press or owned by the you know who's we are relentlessly fed a diet of tripe and complete distortion.  I hope places like TED can help to feed folks nutritious input to stretch minds, entertain, educate and raise the spirit.

Another time for those who arent up to speed about making DVDs for watching on the sofa (theres a limit to how much one can watch on ones computer chair) I'll add a little something - it aint hard.

In the meantime as there is a lot of material there could EVERYONE who watches a TED video (or a youtube video or anything else) that they would recommend to others please mention it here.

 cool

Here is a brief compilation of tiny tasters of the Best 10 Ted talks of all time .... the first 3 a snip of Al Gore, some guy talking about "do you ever imagine Shakespeare being 7 ... imagine what that was like for the teacher" smiley and then Jill Bolte Taylor (who we have had on TTEM before) a neuroanatomist talking about her stroke...

Fantastic!

How to Make a DVD Re: Make your own TV Channel
« Reply #3 on: 16 January 2009 »

There are many great free resources out there...

I use (and would recommend) http://www.any-video-converter.com/ - all you do is drag and drop or paste in the links and it will convert to any format (eg mp4).  Most computers come with some DVD authoring software ... the simplest (bit tacky perhaps) is Windows DVD Maker ... again all one has to do is drag and drop the mp4s onto that and away you go smiley

It really is worth the effort - I GUARANTEE if you do it you will be glad you did ... there is so much more quality material (and no annoying ads) on the www than on the tv ... whats more you can be a real nice person and make copies for your friends and family too ... eg the TED top 10 talks would have something for most anyone in  cool

Good luck!

Mike behave...I have this "guy " on a pedestal and his name is Sir Ken Robinson It was a post I slipped in the Role of Teachers section but perhaps more appropriate here. He talks about the way schools "...mined our minds "  for a particular commodity. A sobering thought. However, he delivers the speech with humour, punctuating serious points with jokes.

Altogether, a memorable talk.

Took me a while to get to this but great talk smiley [for those of you to whome 307 means nothing] "To learn more about our very real, very physical need for romantic love, Helen Fisher and her research team took MRIs of people in love -- and people who had just been dumped."

I always feel a little uncomfortable about materialist reductionism but that's my problem  smiley [or maybe the neurologists  grin after all its a *feeling* that we feel not just some electricity down a certain set of cells wink]

Anyway another brain par excellence speaker - fantastically engaging [he asks for an extra minute near the end and the audience burst into spontaneous applause] - inter alia how to cure decade long pain with a $3 device :-O

http://www.ted.com/talks/vilayanur_ramachandran_on_your_mind.html

Its perhaps semantics but maybe brain rather than mind... Anyway Mike's sensitivities to one side you gotta check it out dudes!  Ain't nothing on your tv sets like that for sure  wink
